Bear Warning

Posted May 1st, 2007 by Playtah

In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and be alert for bears while in the bush.  We advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren’t expecting them. In addition, we advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.

Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings: black bear dropping are smaller and contain lots of berries and squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear droppings contain little bells and smell like pepper.

    That’s about right.

I knew some bears several years ago. I should post about it someday.

LOL…so this means, if you are in a bush and bare watch out for bear?

And…hang tight to your bells and pepper spray.

No really, I get it. LOL, priceless.

Someday I might post about the only bear I ever saw in the wild, near Cadillac. I’m pretty sure he was not wearing a muzzle, too. I’d better stop before I make the entire post right here.

    Fishing gear in Alaska:
    1. Fishing License
    2. Fishing pole
    3. Fishing Tackle
    4. .44 magnum
I’m not making this up. A group of us went to Alaska last summer to do some work for a Christian youth camp. Any time we went to the river to go fishing, the camp director gave us his .44. Why a .44 magnum? Because a .357 magnum only makes the bears mad. We did not shoot at any (we saw several) and the one that got a little too interested in our salmon catch, well, we didn’t have to outrun the bear, just the other fishermen.
And the comment about droppings is probably right, pepper spray only adds seasoning.
