Volume

Posted April 28th, 2006 by Playtah

I have a loud voice.  This is great for acting and performing, but it can cause moments of awkwardness if left unharnessed.

Wednesday Evening, April 26.

My friend Rachel and I planned to meet at the local Denny’s for dinner.  While on the way there, I spoke with my Mom on the phone, telling her about the process of getting my new car (we’ll cover that later).  The issue of finance came up, and I mentioned that I might have to sell my body for money.  (Don’t worry–joking about that is funny because I’m about as far from a “whore” as you can get.)  We both had a good laugh.

I arrived at Denny’s and met Rachel.  Our waiter’s name was Freedom.  (That doesn’t have much to do with my story, but I thought it was interesting.)  My phone rang, and it was Dad.  I mentioned to him jokingly that I told Mom I may have to sell my body for money for the car.  I thought I was being decently quiet.  Apparently not.

As soon as I said it, I immediately captured the attention of the people sitting behind us.  My waiter, halfway across the room, stopped and looked at me.   I suspect that outside of the restaurant, traffic screeched to a halt and dogs stopped barking.

That was one of the times in my life when I was caught off guard, and a little embarrassed.  The moral of the story is: if you’re talking on the phone in a restaurant, you’re probably louder than you think you are, especially if you’re discussing an exchange of carnal favors for car payments.

On the upside, I did get an offer from the table behind me.

Thank you for leaving it at that point. It really just went downhill from there.
Do you know where your head is?

    Hi, Wendy,
This comment is about an older blog you had - - about seeing Donald Miller. By any chance did you see him at a Writers’ Conference at Calvin College? My son-in-law went to that conference, and told me what a good writer Donald Miller is, and actually sent me to a website that had some funny things that he said. [Example - a running discourse on how the publishing business has “scammed” us readers by coming up with something they call “fiction”, which Donald Miller says is actually (can you believe it) . . . LIES.] It was great. Anyway, were you at that conference?
And, I am enjoying your blogs so much - - learning about the intelligence of ants (the discovery channel does not cover this), the volume of phone etiquette in public places (public service announcements do not cover this), and other equally important information. I’m suprised (and glad) that you don’t charge a fee to pass along these tidbits of knowledge. Oh, but I do appreciate them. Thank you. :)
