Holy Matrimony?
Was Jesus married?
Before your knee-jerk reaction causes you to yell “No!”, think about it.
There is no place in the Bible that says Jesus was married. And there is no place that says He was not married.
Some people may point out that the Church is the Bride of Christ, so He probably wouldn’t have married on earth. A seemingly good argument, but wait. Remember when Jesus was asked about a man who had seven wives? He said that in heaven, people are neither married nor given in marriage. So if Jesus did have an earthly wife, once she died and was in heaven, she is no longer bound to Jesus in marriage, so Jesus can marry the Church.
Are there any prophecies or characteristics of Jesus that would be contrary to the idea of Him being married? Do you have any substantial evidence to prove that Jesus was or was not married? I don’t have solid proof for you either way.
Now, I don’t really think He was married, because it is never mentioned in Scripture. But my bigger point here is to get you thinking. How many of your beliefs are based on sound study and education, and how many are just based on what sounds good, or what you’ve heard? This is a great example, because I think most Christians would say that Christ was not married. But they would probably be hard pressed to show you evidence as to why. Examine your beliefs. Are there beliefs you hold that you have not studied? Are there things that you hold on to as live-or-die issues that really don’t affect the outcome? For example, if it were shown that Jesus was married, would that affect your faith at all?

My opinion (based on Scripture) is that Jesus was not married. The reason I think that is because in 1 Corinthians chapter 7 Paul teaches about marriage and one of the things he talks about is that God allows marriage so that we, being the sinners that we are and being prone to immorality, will not go about sinning immmoraly.
So, here’s my reasoning…if Jesus was sinless (Hebrews 7:26) then it wouldn’t make sense, based on Paul’s teaching that Jesus was married.
That’s it in a nutshell for me. I’m looking forward to Pastor Mike’s teaching on it in Renaissance in the next couple weeks. I don’t know a whole lot about all this “DaVinci” stuff going around so I can’t make an opinion based on that…just on what I’ve seen in Scripture.
Wendy, you always do a good job of making me think! Thanks!
Rock on Chick!!!
This is not based on hours of study, just Scriptures that came to my mind when I was thinking about it.

It’s something I’ve never really pondered deeply before…but I was in a conversation recently with someone about Mary Magdalene…and knowing myself as a human, when I meet an awesome, Godly man, how taken I am by him on many levels (spiritual, emotional…what have you)…and to think that Mary and other women were in the presence of not just a Godly man, but The God-Man, you KNOW that there had to be more going on in those women’s hearts…and it was intriguing to me to think of how Jesus might have interacted and loved them, even knowing their hearts. Interesting and thought-provoking discussion, FR. You rock!

well… if Jesus was married, it would have made a great reality TV show. I’d watch it. =;-)
